County treasurer accounts, 1798-1836.

Series contains four groups of documents based on the functions of Massachusetts county treasurers as outlined above: (1) Letters and accounts, 1798-1801, forwarded to the Massachusetts state treasurer by various county treasurers, detailing amounts of court fees (i.e., costs, fines, etc.) collected, and expenses incurred, accounts being certified by a justice of peace. (2) County treasurers' accounts, 1818-1825, listing accounts by date with name of treasurer and county, amount due county, remarks, and the date and amount of warrant. (3) County treasurers' accounts, 1825-1836, listing by date name of county treasurer, total amount including court and licensing fees, amounts listed separately, and date and amount of warrant. Reverse side of volume lists by date accounts where balances were due the Commonwealth, giving name of county treasurer, date of account, remarks (court fees, licenses), and amount received. (4) Court fees/licenses, 1822-1834, listing court fees credited to the Commonwealth by county treasurers, with detailed accounts by date for Dec. 1825-1834, with name of county, court term, and total.

Throughout the provincial period, Massachusetts towns were periodically assessed by the Treasury with taxes for the defraying of public charges and support of the government. This practice increased in importance and frequency during the Revolutionary War, as individual colonies became largely responsible for financial support of the war effort. Resolves 1777-78, c 398 (Oct. 9, 1777), dictated that all Massachusetts financial support of the war was thenceforth to be based on taxation only, with ...
